Watch Two Designers Compete to Recreate the Tissue Box for Yotel

Then they present their prototypes to space-efficient hotel chain, YOTEL.

In this episode of The Next Great Package, two designer contestants are challenged to create a tech-forward packaging solution for the common tissue box and pitch it to the General Manager of YOTEL New York.

Designers take the tissue box form, an ordinary hotel room staple and attempt to make it functional for the modern traveler by integrating features that either support or incorporate common traveler technology.

This challenge inspires viewers to expand their definition of “packaging” and explore how paper materials can be integrated with technology mechanical and electrical elements. Aside from the mechanical elements, each prototype is created with cardboard and paper-based materials, showcasing paper’s durability, moldability, and strength as a design and engineering medium.

Taking on this challenge are industrial designers Isis Shiffer and McKay Nilson. Both designers use their product development experience utilizing multiple materials to create functioning, mechanical solutions to the challenge. The final prototypes are judged by Joseph Turano, the General Manager of YOTEL New York.
