Shark Week: 3 Ways to Watch It Without Cable

You don't need cable to catch all the excitement.

by Josie Rhodes Cook

Shark Week 2018 kicked off Sunday, July 22 and will feature a full week of shark-related programming on the Discovery Channel. This year is also the 30th anniversary of Shark Week, which is kind of a big deal. But if you don’t have cable and are bummed out that you won’t be able to catch any of the action, don’t despair. There are plenty of ways to watch Shark Week without cable for all the cord-cutters out there.

PlayStation Vue, DirecTV Now, and Free Content From Discovery are just a few of the options available to you for streaming the shark-centric event from Discovery.

Shark Week on PlayStation Vue

PlayStation Vue is a streaming service you can use to watch this year’s Shark Week event. It generally features sports, news, and other TV programming; but if you’re specifically looking for a streaming service that will give you access to Shark Week, Vue might be a good option for you.

PlayStation Vue offers a five-day free trial, or you can sign up for a monthly subscription option. Discovery Channel is included in Vue’s Access package for $39.99 a month. All you have to do is sign up, and start watching Shark Week on a device like a Roku player, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Android TV, a web browser, Google Chromecast, or iOS or Android mobile and tablet devices — and, of course, you can watch on PlayStation consoles as well.

Shark Week on DirecTV Now

You can also use DirecTV Now to watch Shark Week without cable. DirecTV Now is another subscription streaming service owned by AT&T.

Discovery is available as part of DirecTV NOW’s most basic package, which costs $35 a month. DirecTV now also offers a $10-a-month deal for three months with a code available on the website; so if you only want to use it for Shark Week, that might be the best choice for you.

You can watch Shark Week on DirecTV NOW on compatible devices, smartphones, tablets, and browsers.

Shark Week on Discovery Channel Online

If you really don’t want to pay anything to watch Shark Week, or just don’t want to sign up for another service, Discovery is offering some Shark Week content online for free. That’s right — you don’t even really need the channel to get in on its Shark Week fun.

Any of the Shark Week content Discovery has available online can be found here. You probably won’t get access to everything without some sort of streaming service or cable package; so if you are truly dedicated to Shark Week, the limited content Discovery is offering online might not be enough for you.

If you want to watch Shark Week but don’t have cable, make sure you do your homework when deciding on a streaming service to use instead. Not all of them have access to Discovery channel, but PlayStation Vue and DirecTV NOW both do, and there’s always the Discovery channel’s website if the content available there is all you need to enjoy Shark Week 2018.
