Deadpool Skewers the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Big 10-Year Celebration

The Regenerating Degenerate has come a long way.

Deadpool continued his penchant for breaking the fourth wall in a hilariously self-aware trailer taking aim at Marvel Studios.

In a thinly veiled parody of Marvel Studios 10th Anniversary Announcement, the Merc With a Mouth recapped the past 10 years of the Deadpool franchise, warts and all. Remember when Wade Wilson made his first feature film appearance in X-Men Origins: Wolverine? Or that time when Ryan Reynolds starred in the 2011 Green Lantern movie? Yeah, Deadpool was cringing just as hard as you were.

But when the Deadpool test footage leaked in 2014 (the trailer erroneously says the leak occurred in 2015), the ensuing enthusiastic reception saved the production from development hell. Now Deadpool is a bonafide A-list superhero, after his first title film made $781.1 million dollars and became the highest grossing R-rated movie in history.

Deadpool 2, which has already received more flattering reviews than its predecessor, is projected to topple that record. Deadpool joked that the series is now an “expansive two movie universe”, but if Deadpool 2 smashes the box office as its expected to, the foul-mouthed merc will be solidified as a golden goose. That was a position previously enjoyed by Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, who remains the only X-Man to have a solo franchise of three movies. Deadpool is poised to succeed that throne.

Not bad for a guy who once got his mouth sewn shut and had retractable katanas installed inside his arms. If you haven’t seen X-Men Origins: Wolverine, trust me, this was nowhere near as cool as it sounds.

Deadpool 2 officially opens on May 18.
