'Last Jedi' Spoilers: Luke Skywalker Tells R2-D2 to Stop Swearing

Okay, it feels like real Star Wars now; Luke Skywalker sounds like he’s whining in the latest trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. This is what Star Wars is all about! Luke Skywalker is finally hanging out with his actual best friend, R2-D2, and complaining.

In one of the latest trailers for The Last Jedi, we get even more new footage (we’re even having a hard time keeping up). Most notably, it finds Luke Skywalker reunited with his faithful astromech droid, R2-D2. One long shot shows R2-D2 getting super stoked to find Luke just hanging out in the gaming area of the Millennium Falcon. Luke’s head is down and he looks bummed out. Maybe he’s feeling the Han Solo death vibrations in the Force? Either way, R2-D2 issues some beeps and boops to which Luke replies, “Hey watch the language.”

This scene references the fact that C-3PO frequently remonstrated R2-D2 about his language in the classic trilogy. The joke here, of course, is the fact that we have no idea exactly what R2-D2 is saying, but based on Luke and C-3PO’s reactions to what he’s beeped or booped, we’re only be able to conclude that R2-D2 has a filthy robot mouth.

The other great thing about this trailer is that it’s the first time in all The Last Jedi footage that Luke sounds like his old farmboy self, and not a depressed Jedi master. It’s like in interacting with R2-D2, Mark Hamill has switched into full-on whiney Luke mood, which is awesome. If Luke Skywalker is going to be super depressed in this movie, that’s fine, but we need to be comforted by the fact that he’s still the biggest whiner in the galaxy.
