'Star Wars' Theory: Snoke Is Anakin Skywalker and Rey's Father

The Force is strong with Rey, maybe even as strong as it was with the Chosen One, Anakin Skywalker. A Star Wars fan theory connects the two of them in a new way, though — what if Snoke created them out of midichlorians.

As published by The Guardian on Wednesday as part of a fan theory roundup, one Star Wars fan, Kim from London, posits that Snoke is Anakin’s real father.

“The next generation is Kylo and Rey, who share [Snoke’s] bloodline and possess raw power,” Kim wrote. “The question is not who are Rey’s parents, but who was Anakin’s father? Everything links back to Darth Vader, hence showing his mask in both movies. Their destinies are intertwined.”

As any good Star Wars fan knows, Anakin is kinda-sorta an immaculate conception baby. Shmi Skywalker couldn’t explain his conception to Qui-Gon Jinn in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, implying that Anakin was a result of the Force. But, as Palpatine later explained to Anakin in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, Darth Plagueis the Wise could manipulate midichlorians”to make life.”

Here’s where that gets interesting.

Palpatine could never achieve that kind of power, but what if Snoke — who’s been revealed to be a pretty damn powerful Force user — is powerful enough to manipulate midichlorians. Snoke could be Anakin’s “father,” and he could also be Rey’s. No one knows who Rey’s parents are, and she’s an incredibly powerful Jedi without an explainable backstory (so far). And even though Last Jedi director Rian Johnson has said that Rey’s parentage isn’t something she’ll care about once she finds out, that could mean a lot of things.

It never really seemed to bother Anakin that he was the result of the Force.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi premieres in theaters on December 15.
