Marvel's Sharon Carter Almost Appeared in 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'

Even though they both technically exist in the same shared universe, the Marvel films and TV shows tend not to crossover all that much. But, a character from the Captain America movies could have followed in the footsteps of Phil Coulson and Maria Hill and showed up on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

At the Television Critics Association press tour on Wednesday, Deadline asked Sharon Carter actress Emily VanCamp if she was ever going to appear in the series. “I think it was discussed,” but I was working on Revenge at the time,” VanCamp said.

Carter, a.k.a. Agent 13, appeared in Captain America: Winter Soldier as a secret S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and potential love interest for Captain America. She later showed up in Civil War to help Steve Rogers and Bucky, and to give the Captain a big kiss. An appearance on ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ set between those two movies could have given her relationship with Steve some fun development, in addition to giving her more opportunities to kick butt and actually feel like a member of the secret organization the show is about.

Due in part to scheduling conflicts and the faster turnaround time of TV, there are rarely any substantial links between Marvel’s film and TV projects. Carter’s presence on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. would have been an organic way for the two divisions to further connect, and to expand on her character, so it’s a shame VanCamp wasn’t available.

When Deadline asked VanCamp if she would be appearing in the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War or another Marvel TV project, the actress said she had “No idea.” When pressed about a role in the 1990s-set Captain Marvel film, she replied, “You guys put it out there.”

“With Marvel, they can give you a call the day before you shoot,” said VanCamp. “You don’t know what’s going on with their movies because they’re very secretive.”

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 5 will begin airing in January 2018.
