Is James Callis Playing the Witness in '12 Monkeys' Season 3?

The second season of Syfy’s mind-bending time travel series 12 Monkeys ended on a gigantic reveal: The Witness, the show’s big villain who is attempting to systematically destroy time and space, was James Cole and Cassandra Railly’s son. We may know that the main time-looped villain of the show is the progeny of the main characters, and that Cole and Railly have to stop him at all costs next season, but we might now know who the actor will be that could play him too.

Entertainment Weekly scored an exclusive casting announcement that actor James Callis, the dude best known to sci-fi fans as Dr. Gaius Baltar on another incredible Syfy series, Battlestar Galactica, is joining 12 Monkeys for an undisclosed role.

The character is described as a “rebellious and enigmatic time-traveler raised throughout history by the Army of the 12 Monkeys, one whose conflicted personal and emotional path will change everything for James Cole (Aaron Stanford) and Dr. Cassandra Railly (Amanda Schull).”

That’s all well and good, and seemed like rather innocuous news until series creator Terry Matalas mentioned the character’s importance. He said Callis is set to play “a highly anticipated and pivotal new character to our series’ mythology.”

And who is a highly anticipated and pivotal character in the series’ mythology!? The Witness, of course!

The only snag in this assumption is that Matalas mentions Callis will play a new character. It’s obvious that Season 3 of 12 Monkeys will up the ambitiousness of the better-than-you-realize series, so Callis could be a completely new face to fight for or against the Army of the 12 Monkeys like Christopher Lloyd. We’ll have to wait and see when the new season premieres in 2017 if that means Callis going to don the creepy Witness mask as well.
