More than just nostalgia.
Nostalgia for the ‘80s is everywhere these days, enough to make upbeat synth scores and lingering shots of shopping malls almost nauseating.
But sometimes, the result of that nostalgia is so rad you can’t help but buy-in.
That may be the case with the upcoming MythForce, which recently showed off its first trailer and screenshots.
MythForce is being developed by Beamdog, the studio behind the Enhanced Editions of Dungeons and Dragons games like Baldur’s Gate and Planescape: Torment.
The upcoming game trades the world-shaking epic stories of Beamdog’s D&D games for a lighthearted romp inspired by classic ‘80s cartoons.
Even a quick glance reveals a remarkable dedication to the aesthetics of Saturday morning adventures like He-Man and She-Ra.
Everything from its character designs to its slightly washed-out colors, captures the look of old-school cartoons and games like Dragon’s Lair.
To match the game’s lighter tone, Beamdog is also exploring a much different genre of classic RPG than it’s used to — the first-person roguelike dungeon crawler.
That means you should have plenty of time to admire MythForce’s gorgeous art as you repeatedly try and fail to best its monstrous enemies.
Like any good cartoon action hero, you’ll need a team of plucky friends at your side. MythForce features co-op with four distinct characters if you don’t want to tackle it solo.
You can play as brave knight Victoria, sneaky rogue Rico, sharp-eyed hunter Hawkins, or mystical mage Maggie. Just like the Planeteers, they’re at their best when they combine their powers.
True to its cartoon roots, MythForce will be released in episodes, starting with “Bastion of the Beastlord” when the game hits Epic Game Store’s Early Access.
Beamdog says MythForce’s official launch should come about a year after the Early Access release, with additional episodes being added along the way.
MythForce enters Early Access on the Epic Game Store on April 20, 2022.
