PS Plus has to put a lot of work in to convince gamers it’s worth as much as Xbox Game Pass. Its new games for September make a strong case, with an eclectic mix of excellent games.

13. Need for Speed Heat

In Need for Speed Heat, you take part in sanctioned races by day and much cooler illegal street races by night. Along with customizing your car and climbing the ranks, you need to outrun the cops to stay afloat.

EA

12. Granblue Fantasy: Versus

Another excellent fighting game from the developer of Guilty Gear Strive, Granblue Fantasy: Versus lets you battle it out as characters from the Granblue Fantasy RPG, and it’s pretty newcomer-friendly, as far as fighters go.

Arc System Works

11. Toem

This quirky photography game won a BAFTA in 2022, and it absolutely deserved it. Toem embodies the joy of photography, challenging you to snap specific images across its lovely isometric environments.

10. Deathloop

September 20

Bethesda’s last PS5 exclusive after its acquisition by Microsoft was the time-loop first-person shooter Deathloop. It uses a Dark Souls-like antagonistic multiplayer mode to spice up your attempt to assassinate eight targets in one day.

Bethesda

9. Assassin’s Creed Origins

September 20

One of the best games in the long-running series, Assassin’s Creed Origins has an excellent story and characters in an engaging version of Egypt. Its combat lacks a little in comparison to Odyssey and Valhalla, but it’s still a must-play.

Ubisoft

8. Watch Dogs 2

September 20

The Watch Dogs series is wildly uneven, but Watch Dogs 2 is the best it’s ever been. It can be played mostly as a stealth game, and its story and protagonist are genuinely captivating.

Ubisoft

7. Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2

September 20

Who didn’t practice throwing a few Spirit Bombs when they were a kid (or an adult)? Mostly a fighting game, it also features a hub city to explore and RPG-esque side quests to complete.

QLOC

6. Spiritfarer: Farewell Edition

September 20

If you want to contemplate your own mortality while kicking back with a chill game, we’ve got great news for you. Spiritfarer is a touching journey to guide lost souls to the afterlife aboard your customizable city-on-a-boat.

Thunder Lotus Games

5. Chicory: A Colorful Tale

September 20

The cute, colorful Chicory has a surprisingly deep story about the process and importance of making art. If you miss coloring books, you need to play it.

Finji

4. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game

Movie tie-ins have a bad rap (for good reason), but Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is a notable exception. It’s a great side-scrolling brawler whether you’re a fan of the comics and movie or not.

Ubisoft

3. Rayman Legends

The original Rayman games are great in their own right, but the 2010s revivals are even better. Rayman Legends features chaotic collect-a-thon platforming for up to four players.

1. Syphon Filter 2 (PS1)

Syphon Filter 2 joins its predecessor on PS Plus. Both are challenging third-person spy shooters, and the sequel adds a fun multiplayer mode.
