5 new sci-fi movies on HBO Max you need to watch ASAP

Whether you’re escaping from the winter weather or just decompressing from the past year, this is a great time to stay inside and catch up on some sci-fi movies you may have missed.

And if you already exhausted your options at the end of 2020, here are the five best sci-fi movies that just landed on HBO Max as of January 1.

5. Escape from New York

John Carpenter’s cult classic set in a dystopian New York City packs a killer synth score, a great cast, and plenty of action — plus it inspired works as disparate as Neuromancer and Metal Gear Solid.

4. Gremlins

Another ‘80s hit, Gremlins turns its classic monster invasion sci-fi premise into a horror-comedy that’s both sweet and scary, while being mostly family-friendly. Don’t skip the sequel, also on HBO Max.

3. Kong: Skull Island

This good-but-not-great take on the mighty Kong pushes action to the forefront, aided by some incredible special effects and an all-star cast putting in better performances than you might expect for so silly a premise.

2. Mad Max: Fury Road

Director George Miller elevates the car chase to its own art form in this visually stunning dystopian masterpiece full of stunts you won’t believe they actually pulled off.

1. V for Vendetta

Probably the most successful film adaptation of an Alan Moore comic (for what that’s worth), V for Vendetta tells a compelling tale of revolution in a dystopian alternate history Britain.
