Mini’s All-Electric Convertible Makes Your Joyrides More Sustainable

Who would’ve thought Mini would be one of the first automakers to give us an electric convertible?

It’s pretty rare to see an all-electric convertible on the road, but your first sighting may soon be this Mini Cooper.

That’s right, Mini is planning on releasing a fully electric Mini Cooper SE with a convertible soft top. Whether you’re into Mini Coopers or not, you have to give credit to Mini for the precedent it’s setting.

Mini first debuted a prototype of its fully-electric Mini Cooper convertible last summer. Mini let outlets like Car and Driver test out the prototype, which the publication noted as being “production ready.”

The soft top can be set as open, closed, or as a sliding roof. Stefanie Wurst, head of the Mini brand, says that the convertible should give drivers an “open-air go-kart feeling.”

Now that it’s a reality, we have some official specs for the convertible EV. The Mini Cooper SE Convertible will be powered by a 135kWh, 184-horsepower electric motor. That means it’ll go from 0 to 60 mph in around 8.2 seconds.

Decent range

Mini says its convertible EV will get around 124 miles. The specs are not very impressive, but you’re more likely buying this Mini Cooper for the fun factor, not the practicality.

The Mini Cooper SE Convertible’s interiors feature a heated steering wheel and seats, which have adjustable thigh support. The driver will also get all of the essential info on a heads-up display.

You’ll be able to tell that this is the electric model with the Mini Electric Badge and bronze finishes on its door handles, side scuttles, and surrounds of the front and rear lights.

Europe exclusive

Bad news for all you Mini stans in the U.S., the Mini Cooper SE Convertible will only be available in Europe. On top of that, Mini is only making 999 units of its electric convertible, serializing each one sold.
