6 stats that explain the electric Hummer hype

GMC's "electric super-truck" is getting a lot of attention. Here are six reasons why, for a change, you should believe the hype.

Hummer's new electric truck is getting a lot of buzz

In just an hour after announcing the Hummer EV, GMC secured preorders for an entire year's worth of production.

While it's unclear just how many trucks that entails (likely several thousand), but the hype train has clearly left the station.

So what's all the fuss about?

1,000 HP

Lots, and lots of horses.

1) Horsepower

Hummer's all-electric truck doesn't compromise in the power department. The vehicle has 1,000 horsepower, 11,500 lb-foot of torque, and can catapult itself from 0-60 miles per hour in just three seconds. For a truck of its size that's a lot of oomph, even for an EV.

350 miles

This titan will get up to 350 miles on one full charge.

2) Battery

The Hummer EV will be the first truck to use GM's Ultium platform and batteries. It'll have a 24-battery module that can be fast-charged, which can add about 100 miles of range in a mere 10 minutes of charging.

18 ft

The length of the Hummer EV. It ain't a Hummer if it ain't big, after all.

3) Size

The truck is 18 feet long, about 7 feet wide, and comes with 35-inch or 37-inch tires. While it's not nearly as big as the Hummers of yore, for an electric vehicle, it's a ship.

10 degrees

This truck can crab walk.

4) Crab Walk

The Hummer EV isn't just relying on power and speed as selling points, though, it also comes with features like "crab walk" which helps the truck achieve a near strafe to either side. To scoot around tight spaces, the tires rotate 10-degrees as opposed to the typical three to five degrees of a normal vehicle. Plus, all four can rotate, not just the front two.

6 ins

The suspension's additional on-demand lift.

5) Extract Mode

Another unique feature in GMC's revamped Hummer will allow the driver to raise the suspension of the truck by 6 inches with the press of a button. This will, theoretically, help avoid damage to the truck's (granted, reinforced) undercarriage when you're traversing some rockier-than-usual terrain.

$112K

Big truck, big price tag.

6) The price of luxury

Hummer will also stay true to its brand by offering this powerful electric truck at a premium price. The first edition, which will be released in fall 2021, starts at $112,595 and subsequent yearly releases will descend in price through 2024. The cheapest will be the $79,000 model that's due in spring of 2024, according to GMC.
