Sony should revive these games to compete with Microsoft and Activision Blizzard

It's time for SOCOM: Modern Warfare.

Microsoft recently spent around $70 billion to purchase Activision Blizzard, one of the largest video game publishers in the world.

This is a big bet on Xbox’s Game Pass service (and its PC counterpart), which recently notched 25 million subscribers — putting Microsoft well on their way to becoming the Netflix of gaming.

With Sony plotting its own subscription service, how can PlayStation stand against the combined might of Call of Duty, Diablo, and The Lost Vikings?

Luckily, the company has a couple of aces up its sleeve: Some long-dormant franchises perfect to steal eyeballs away from Master Chief.

Resistance: Fall of Man

This one's a layup.

Once upon a time, the alien-blasting shooter Resistance was one of Sony's most notable franchises, but the explosion of Call of Duty and Battlefield ate at its market share.

Though the last few entries in the series were far from stellar — if you remember Burning Skies, kudos — there’s room in the marketplace for a dumb shooter with high production values and great gamefeel.

Killzone

Actually, let's forget this one. Not even Insomniac could revive this dinosaur.

SOCOM

For those PlayStation 2 owners who were savvy enough to invest in the console's primitive online play, SOCOM U.S. Navy SEALS was online Call of Duty before Modern Warfare.

While tastes have changed in the intervening decade, there's still demand for military shooters with a more grounded milieu than the akimbo shotgun blasts of latter-day COD. It's been more than a decade since the series' last entry, but we're guessing a lot of PlayStation fans want to see this one revived in some form or fashion. We haven't seen a big-budget "realistic" shooter in the Sony family for a while, so perhaps it's time.

Sly Cooper

Ratchet & Clank has enjoyed consistent new entries for years now, but the duo's raccoon pal has been consigned to the mascot dustbin along with Gex and Blinx the Time Cat.

While Sly has never quite garnered the respect that his games deserve, the 3D mascot platformer has enjoyed a bit of a revival in recent years, and Sony needs to get in on the action.

It's been almost ten years since Gran Turismo 6 exploded eyeballs at the very end of the PS3 era, and we've been patiently waiting for a hypothetical GT7 for years.

...Wait, there's a new Gran Turismo in development? And it comes out in March? Whoops. Well, we'll believe it when we see it. At least you don't need a PS5 for this one — but it probably helps.

Metal Gear

Come on, you know Konami will sell it. It's not like they're doing anything with it, right?

Konami

The Getaway

Okay, hear us out on this one.

Sony

Sandbox crime games were once the biggest thing in the world, but now there's only one player in town: GTA Online.

While the neo-noir-inspired The Getaway never set the world on fire, there is serious room in the genre for new contenders. Sony's London Studio basically already made an unofficial Getaway in the VR exclusive Blood and Truth, so why not give them a little more of a budget?
