Mourn Daft Punk with behind-the-scenes photos of its iconic helmets

Daft Punk has retired, but its contribution to robot cosplay lives on.

Daft Punk is no more. This week, via a nearly eight-minute-long goodbye video titled "Epilogue" the (arguably most influential) electronic group of the past three decades officially broke up.

From a musical perspective, there are dozens of tracks that cemented Daft Punk as electronic juggernauts since its genesis in 1993 (see our list here), but equally as important to Daft Punk's fame was the full-on embrace of robotic stage personas, originally centered on two very recognizable props...

These wild robot helmets.

In a thread auspiciously posted to Twitter by the fan account "Daft_Wub" right before the group's retirement announcement this week, we're treated to see a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of Daft Punk's original robot helmet, including...

Sketches...

These are initial sketches from designers, Alex and Martin, showing various helmet concepts before they were created.

Images tweeted by Daft-Wub, which have been around for a while but just recently resurfaced, depict the various stages of the design process.

As far as the technical process of creating the helmets goes, this short video with Alterian's Tony Gardner is pretty illuminating. As Gardner explains, compact light-up displays are much more common now, but in 2001, when Daft Punk started wearing the helms, the costumes were cutting edge.

Behind-the-scenes images also show the creation of other facets of Daft Punk's costume, including the iconic gold gauntlets.

While these photos won't bring Daft Punk back to making music, they're a pretty great way of appreciating the vision and creativity of musicians (electronic or otherwise) at their best. Let's also be grateful these helmets didn't go the way of some of the group's iconic gear...
