Oumuamua is the name of the first interstellar object that was detected passing through the Solar System. Formally named as 1I/2017 U1, it was discovered at the Haleakala Observatory in Hawaii, on October 19, 2017, 40 days after it passed its closest point to the Sun. Its Hawaiian name translates in English to ”visitor from afar arriving first.” Some astronomers, perhaps acting in a spirit of fun, have theorized that it might be a probe from an alien civilization.
