Otto Warmbier was an American student who visited North Korea as a tourist in 2016. While there, he was arrested on charges that he stole a propaganda sign. He was convicted, made to record and apology, and sentenced to 15 years of hard labor. Warmbier’s imprisonment became an international incident, with both the Obama and Trump administration stating that they sought his release. North Korea released Warmbier on June 12, 2017. He had fallen into a coma due, North Korea claimed, to botulism, but later tests showed significant brain damage. Warmbier tragically died in a hospital on June 19, one week after his release.
