Volkswagen's sleek ID.Aero concept is a blueprint for its EV future

The German automaker finally unveiled a mid-size sedan as part of its ID family of electric vehicles.

Volkswagen has been pushing hard into the electric vehicle market with everything from a hot hatchback to a minibus.

Surprisingly, the ID.Aero is actually the first fully-electric sedan as part of Volkswagen’s growing EV lineup.

The ID.Aero is still just a concept car at the moment, but it will be the sixth vehicle in Volkswagen’s ID lineup of EVs. Previously, Volkswagen revealed its ID.5 GTX, a fully electric SUV, and its electric minibus, the ID.Buzz, which were both on the company’s MEB architecture.

No door handles

Volkswagen’s design for its latest EV focuses on aerodynamics and offers a drag coefficient of 0.23, rivaling Tesla’s Model 3. Volkswagen even removed the door handles, replacing them with “illuminated touch surfaces” since it was a better aerodynamic design.

The ID.Aero will run on a 77 kWh lithium-ion battery that gives it a roughly 385-mile range. These estimates are based off a non-production model, but if the ID.Aero makes it to production with those numbers, that would make it one of the longer range EVs out there.

Volkswagen didn’t reveal any other specs beyond its range and drag coefficient. Design-wise, the ID.Aero has a cool light strip that wraps around the body of the EV. Volkswagen will also be throwing on 22-inch two-tone wheels onto its EV sedan.

Volkswagen says the ID.Aero will first be produced for the Chinese market, going on sale in the second half of 2023. Volkswagen says it’s looking to be the “leading supplier of sustainable vehicles in China.” A European version will start production in 2023 as well.

Volkswagen isn’t leaving the American market in the dust, even though it didn’t offer any dates for a U.S. version. Ralf Brandstätter, CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars, says the ID.Aero will be released in Europe, China, and the U.S.
