The buzz about Rivian's electric truck explained in 5 key specs

Rivian filled all the reservations spots to buy the $75,000 launch edition of its new line of electric trucks.

The electric truck sector is revved up, and it's not all about Tesla's Cybertruck. Last month, Hummer opened up orders for its new all-electric truck which promptly sold out in just 10 minutes

This week, Rivian, an American automaker, sold out reservations to purchase two versions of its first-ever electric truck, the R1T, in just under a week. That's about six months of production, though we don't know how many, exactly, that translates to.

So, what's the big deal?

300+ miles

Both models will have more than 300 miles of range.

Both of Rivian's trucks are set to have more than 300 miles of range, making them competitive with other players like Hummer and Tesla. Eventually, the company says a long-range R1T will offer motorists more than 400 miles on a single charge.

4

The number of electric motors in each Rivian trucks.

There are four total motors on the R1T, which helps off-road and on-road traction. The Truck is able to "torque vector," meaning the necessary amount of power depending on the vehicle's situation cab be sent to each wheel independently. Those motors also enable some pretty far-out features that we'll get into later on.

754 hp

Enough horses to get from 0-60 in three seconds.

This thing has got some power too. In addition to the 0-60 mph time of just three seconds, there's also 826 pounds per foot of torque. Both trucks are truly built for off-roading even if most drivers will be cruising on paved roads.

360°

This thing can turn on a dime, literally, thanks to a feature called "Tank Turn."

Hummer's electric truck may have "crab walk," but Rivian R1T has the "tank turn." Because Rivian's trucks have a four motor configuration, each wheel can be moved independently, meaning it can run motors on one side forward while the others go in reverse, enabling it to turn a full 360 degrees on the spot.

Rivian's trucks will be decidedly more expensive than Tesla's Cybertruck which is offering a base model at $39,900. The $75,000 Launch edition will actually put it in between Hummer's upcoming electric truck and the Cybertruck. That price will eventually come down though, if you can wait. The full pricing options are as follows...

PRICE

  • $75,000 for a Launch Edition that will start delivering in June 2021 in the U.S., and November 2021 for Canada.
