HP’s new tablet has a flippable hi-res webcam

A 13-megapixel camera flips forwards and backwards for hi-res selfies as well as front-facing pics and video.

HP has been announcing a lot of products recently (like this stealth gaming PC hidden inside an ultrawide monitor). Now, among that list of monitors, laptops, and all-in-one desktop computers, is a Windows tablet with a rotatable camera.

HP

Tablet or PC?

The 11-inch tablet runs on the latest version of Microsoft's operating system, Windows 11. HP calls this device a hybrid since it’s basically a Windows computer that can be used in tablet mode, though an optional keyboard (sold separately) adds a layer of tactile functionality for a laptop-like experience that can be used in both landscape and portrait modes. The tablet is also compatible with the HP Rechargeable Tilt Pen.

  • CPU: Quad-Core Intel Pentium Silver N6000 (3.3GHz)
  • GPU: Integrated Intel UHD graphics
  • Memory: 4GB
  • Storage: 128GB M.2 NVMe SSD (expandable with MicroSD)
  • Display: 11-inch IPS 2.1K screen with 400 nits max brightness
  • I/O: 1 Superspeed USB-C for power, data transfer, and video out

With the ability to use Windows 11 Snap Layouts in any orientation, the tablet comes with a kickstand that also acts as a back cover. Snap Layouts is a convenient feature that groups apps together, making it easier to view multiple windows at once. On a tablet, where a single screen often means constantly switching between app windows, Snap Layouts is the type of time-saving feature perfect for multitasking on the go.

Flip out

As cool as a hybrid Windows 11 tablet PC sounds, this HP tablet has one huge trick up its sleeve. With no front-facing camera underneath the bezel like every other tablet, the rear-facing camera can flip out and be reversed to face you. This clever bit of design is refreshing for a tablet, and since it only relies on a single camera, HP made sure to make it a good one.

Not bad for a tablet cam.

According to the fine print, the Intel processor onboard (a four-core Pentium Silver N6000) should handle 1080p video, with the ability to capture images at up to 4K. It’s not clear if the tablet is capable of this, but it does at least have the internals to pull it off.

For creatives

The tablet works with HP Palette, a suite of apps that HP calls “a digital workspace for creators.” The new service includes four apps.

HP Palette apps:

  • PhotoMatch: Use AI facial recognition for searching images
  • HP QuickDrop: Send media files from an HP to any mobile device, regardless of OS
  • Duet for HP: Connects to another HP device to create a bigger workspace
  • Concepts: Quickly sketch or edit a file to send via QuickDrop
