It's been a long time coming, but Apple will finally let iOS users set Spotify as the default music app in iOS 14.5. For the millions of Spotify users out there, this is a huge deal.

If you're one of the (likely many) people who are excited about this long-awaited concession from Apple, we're here to tell you how to make the switch from the Apple Music default after downloading the iOS 14.5 public beta.

Before we start..

It's worth noting that iOS 14.5 is still in beta, meaning features, including this one, are still in flux. That also means there's a chance that the final version might have a different process, and seeing as how the method we're about to discuss incorporates a somewhat stilted use of Siri, signs point to simplification in the future. With that out of the way...

Let's get started...

The key to making this work...

Use voice commands to summon Siri to play a song or artist. This pulls out a drop-down menu with a list of services that play music on your phone.

Here's what that should look like.

Tap "yes" to allow Siri to access the data on Spotify, or whichever app you choose.

If all goes according to plan, iOS 14.5 will pull up your requested artist or song, and in the future, your choice should dictate which app launches.

People using this method for selecting default apps have noted that the process doesn't always stick. Subsequent attempts to play music may either prompt you to select an app again or use a different app altogether.

As previously stated, the process is still buggy given the fact that iOS 14.5 is still in beta testing. In the future, it would make more sense for Apple to incorporate a more manual process.

That process might involve being able to set default apps similarly to how the current version of iOS allows, by selecting the "default app" option in the app settings menu.

For now, we'll have to wait and see what the final version of iOS 14.5 has to offer. While there's no exact release date for the new software, you can probably expect 14.5 to be downloadable outside of public and developer betas in the next few weeks.
