Here’s the first in-depth look at Oculus’ 'Resident Evil 4' VR remake

The game world's most popular zombie apocalypse is coming to the Oculus Quest 2.

More than 16 years after its release, Capcom’s Resident Evil 4 is still getting new treatments, this time in the form of a full-fledged VR remake for the Oculus Quest 2.

No one has actually had a chance to play the latest VR iteration, but Oculus recently gave an intimate look at the port’s gameplay, menus, and systems, and based on that look, there’s a lot to be excited about.

Though the game will stay the same at its core, there will be (as you might expect from a VR port) major changes to some mechanics, including...

That includes objects like ammo which can now be picked up with hand-tracking.

Weapons swapping

Players can now swap weapons from their belt by simply “grabbing them off your body” according to Oculus.

Oculus even got into the port’s movement system, explaining that players will be able to control Leon with the Oculus Quest’s analog stick as well as the typical teleportation systems seen in other VR games.

The game will also get a graphical upgrade with new textures and support for playing at higher frame rates. Everything will be first-person vantage as opposed to the original’s third-person view.

Plus, players will be peppered with 3D spatial audio.

Developers of the remake, Armature Studios, have spent about two years redesigning Resident Evil 4 for the Oculus Quest 2, so it’s safe to say they’ve acknowledged the gravity around porting one of the most beloved survival/horror games to the Quest 2. This also means...

Oculus says Armature is committed to leaving core aspects of Resident Evil 4’s character, like cut-scenes, untouched.


Oculus says the game will be released later this year, though there's no specific date yet.
