'Fantasian' is a video game made using real-life miniatures

With the help of creators from the 'Final Fantasy' franchise, 'Fantasian' blends the practical and the digital.

There's something endearing about practical effects. Without them, films like Star Wars, Blade Runner, or Legend would arguably have never have become the touchtones of magic movie-making they're regarded as today.

Movies aren't the only medium capable of artistically mixing the practical and digital worlds, however – or at least not if RPG title, Fantasian, has anything to say about it.

Fantasian, developed by Mistwalker, is an upcoming RPG that uses real-life dioramas as settings for its otherwise digital game.

Fantasian has already been in development for three years, and in that time creators, which include people like Nubuo Uematsu and Hironobu Sakaguchi of the Final Fantasy franchise, have made a lot of dioramas.

According this short video, Sakaguchi says mixing the practical and digital involves making models by hand and then photographing them, after which they're overlaid with 3D characters. In his words, Fantasian is a game that, "shouldn't exist."

Those who are interested in playing Fantasian apparently won't have to wait much longer. According to Sakaguchi, the game will come out this year, exclusively on Apple Arcade, though there's no specific date as of yet.

For now, Sakaguchi's Twitter feed will have to act as your Fantasian fix.
