'Catan' in 3D will make you consider dropping $300 on a board game

Catan superfans have officially been put on notice...

This week, Asmodee, publishers of the popular board game Catan, opened up pre-orders for a special new edition of the game that includes 3D pieces based on models that were hand-sculpted by the game’s creator, Klaus Teuber.

According to the Catan website, the special edition version is rife with hand-painted goodies, including: 3D terrain tiles, sea frames, harbor markers, an antiqued robber figure and player pieces, and some custom dice. Though, in all of that special edition glory, there is some bad news...

And orders won't start shipping until August.

If you’re like most people, you’re probably not going to drop $300 on a board game you could get for about $50 right now, but cost aside this thing does look pretty awesome.

Plus, as Polygon notes, that $300 price tag for a 3D set could theoretically be worse...
