8 Super Smash Bros characters we need right now

Minecraft is making its Super Smash debut, but we're still yearning for a chance to battle as these iconic characters.

It's official

Minecraft is coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. This weekend, game design legend Masahiro Sakurai, creator of Kirby and Super Smash Bros., announced that Steve and Alex, two of Minecraft's more iconic playable characters, will make their way into the Super Smash universe.

The addition makes sense for a lot of reasons. Minecraft is one the biggest games, period, and its fans probably share a healthy amount of crossover with fans of Super Smash Bros.

Though we're excited to see what Minecraft's pixelated players have to offer, we're still hungry for a chance to enter battle as these

Crash Bandicoot

Crash Bandicoot, the titular character from Naughty Dog's PlayStation memorable action-adventure game should be high on the list of potential Super Smash additions. Though the wily bandicoot has long been a figurative and literal mascot for Sony, Super Smash has shown a willingness to branch out beyond the Nintendo umbrella, making Crash within the realm of reason as a Super Smash entry.

Sora

When Square-Enix and Disney collided to make Kingdom Hearts, one of the most successful franchises in game history was born. While Sora's addition to Super Smash wouldn't move the needle as much as the original Kingdom Hearts, it would definitely a lot of fans of the franchise.

Master Chief

Mast Chief may be the ultimate warrior in Xbox's pivotal shooter, Halo, but what happens when he's pitted against the heroes of Smash Bro's combined universe? Hard to say for sure, but boy we'd like to see what Kirby looks like after subsuming The Chief himself.

Waluigi

Like Rodney Dangerfield and Mario's feckless sidekick Luigi, Waluigi gets no respect. Wario might've made the cut, but Luigi's purple-clad foil sits on the sidelines. When will Waluigi get the recognition he deserves?

Rayman

It's hard to discuss platformers without talking about Rayman. The franchise produced a whopping 45 games and made the titular Rayman one of the most iconic characters in a any video game. The only thing that's missing is a chance to bop Link across the noggin with those puffy white gloves.

Squall Leonhart

Before the addition of Cloud Strife, characters like Final Fantasy VIII's Squall Leonhart might seem like a longshot. With a name like that and one of the most iconic weapons in Final Fantasy's long history (the gunblade), he might actually be in consideration.

Ratchet & Clank

Ratchet & Clank have it all. They've got gadgets; personality; and enough cartoon violence to put them at the top of the list for characters ready to enter the Smash arena.

Dante

Rumors of Devil May Cry's Dante being introduced into the Super Smash Bros.' universe swelled when the former series director Hideki Kamiya tweeted about which character fans would like to see in Super Smash Bros Ultimate, including Dante as a possible option. Those dreams haven't materialized yet but we're still crossing or handguns for a shot at hack-and-slashing our way through a 1 v.1.
