Square-Enix’s excellent MMORPH, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, is already in the Guinness Book of World Records for most original pieces of music in a video game, but in the coming years, the game will achieve another seemingly unprecedented record as it makes its way onto the PlayStation 5.

At a FFXIV Fan Gathering in London held Wednesday, Square Enix game director Naoki Yoshida — credited with rescuing FFXIV’s disastrous initial launch by overseeing development on A Realm Reborn — confirmed to the crowd that the FFXIV developers were fast at work on a version of the game for the upcoming PlayStation 5.

The original Final Fantasy XIV was released for Windows in 2010, and the Realm Reborn remake hit Windows and PlayStation 3 in 2013 before coming to PlayStation 4 in 2014 and Mac in 2015. So by the time FFXIV hits the PS5 sometime after the console’s release in late 2020, this MMORPG will have existed across three generations of Sony consoles.

It was also announced earlier this month that the game was in development for the Xbox One as well. And in June, Sony Pictures Television announced that a live-action TV series based on Final Fantasy XIV was in development. Netflix also has a delightful series about a father and son bonding over the game called Final Fantasy XIV: Dad of Light.

World of Warcraft might be bigger and more recognizable as a high-profile MMORPG, but since its first release in 2004, that game always been on PC or Mac, never a console. FFXIV is only getting more expansive as is spreads across every gaming platform imaginable like a delightful infection. If the Nintendo Switch were capable of supporting an MMO, it would probably go there. What’s next, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn on mobile devices?
