Everything we know about 'Tenet,' Christopher Nolan's mysterious new movie

The film already boasts an all-star cast full of Nolan-verse newcomers and veterans.

Christopher Nolan may be the only director in the world who can get away with being as cagey about the details of his films as he is. Films like Inception and Interstellar have been cloaked in mystery, with advertising campaigns that kept details as close to the chest as possible. Nolan is taking it to a whole new level for his upcoming 2020 film, Tenet. Details on the film are still scarce. Even the short teaser — only shown in select theaters and not available online — raises further questions. Here’s everything we know about Christopher Nolan’s Tenet.

What is Tenet about?

At this point, nobody knows. We do have some idea about the film’s genre, which has been [described]((https://www.ign.com/articles/2019/05/22/christopher-nolan-begins-filming-new-espionage-action-movie-tenet) as “an action thriller taking place in the world of espionage.” That said, attempting to put Nolan’s work into one specific category is a tricky proposition, as his films often bend genre. Inception is an action-heist-science fiction hybrid. The Prestige is a period drama with sci-fi elements. Even a film as seemingly straightforward as Dunkirk is actually a nonlinear thriller. All this being said, we know that the film is allegedly Knowing Nolan’s tendencies, expect the reality of what this means to shift a bit as we learn more about the film.

Who is in the cast?

Tenet already boasts an all-star cast full of Nolan-verse newcomers and veterans. It stars John David Washington of Ballers and BlackkKlansmen fame. Alongside him, we’ll see stars like future Batman Robert Pattinson and Widows star Elizabeth Debicki. The film will also feature Michael Caine and Kenneth Branagh again, both of whom have appeared his in Nolan’s films before.

Where will Tenet take place?

We have no clue as to what nation, world, or timeline will be the setting for Tenet. We do know that Nolan will be filming Tenet in seven countries, including the U.K., the United States, Denmark, Estonia, India, Norway, and Italy. It feels safe to assume that some of these locations will feature doubling (the act of one location being used to depict a different location in a film) and that a good deal of studio sets will be utilized. However, a great deal of on-location shooting has taken place in Mumbai, leading us to believe that it will feature prominently in the film.

When is the Tenet release date?

Tenet is due out on July 17, 2020. It’s something of a lucky date for Nolan, who already has a great track record on the third weekend of July. Tenet will be the fifth of his films to be released during that time frame. Others include The Dark Knight and Inception.
