'Fire Emblem Three Houses' Reveals 3 New 'Smash Bros Ultimate' DLC Options

Which new character will become a 'Super Smash Bros. Ultimate' DLC?

Nintendo didn’t reveal who the next Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC character would be during Wednesday’s Nintendo Direct, but another upcoming game may be a pretty huge hint. Fire Emblem: Three Houses, which features a brand new cast of characters and a Harry Potter-esque adventure, seems like obvious fodder for future downloadable content in Smash Bros. Ultimate.

After all, it’s a running joke that Smash is already overflowing with [anime sword boys and girls, most of whom come from the long-running Fire Emblem series. That includes Marth, Roy, Ike, Lucina, and Chrom, along with some non-Fire Emblem fighters like Cloud and Shulk. So it seems only natural that Three Houses will mean another sword-wielding challenger in Smash Bros. Ultimate.

The only question is: which one? Here are a few different options for Smash Bros. Ultimate based on the initial Fire Emblem: Three Houses trailer.

The Main Character of Fire Emblem: Three Houses

This unnamed hero, who comes in both male and female variants, begins the game as a mercenary before discovering an “unknown power within”. At that point you’ll head to a monastery and accept a teaching position. The trailer also shows the Fire Emblem: Three Houses protagonist in combat with a sword, so they’d be a perfect fit for Smash Bros. Ultimate.

The only problem? The male version looks a lot like Marth. Maybe even too much to join Smash. Thankfully, there are plenty of other options.

One of the house leaders

The three houses in this new Fire Emblem game share some clear similarities with the four houses of Hogwarts. They coexist within a school, but each has its own distinct leaders. The big difference, however, is that each student’s house is decided by which of this world’s three major kingdoms they come from (not their personality).

Each house leader is essentially heir to the throne of their respective kingdom. They’re also a diverse group, and any one of them (or all three) would fit right in with the rest of the Smash Bros. Ultimate roster.

This guy?

Finally, this big burly dude seems to show up a lot in the Fire Emblem: Three Houses trailer. We have no idea who he is, but the fact that he’s seen fighting against the protagonist suggests he’s a bad guy. He’d also mark a nice departure from the Fire Emblem characters we’re used to seeing in Smash games.

When will this DLC character come to Smash Bros. Ultimate?

Well, we’re just speculating here, but assuming this really is Nintendo’s plan, we’d guess the DLC will be pegged to the official release of Fire Emblem: Three Houses. In that case, you can expect it all to happen this summer.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses launches July 26 for Nintendo Switch.
