How to Catch the Legendary Regirock Pokémon

So long, Registeel. Hello, Regirock.

After weeks of doing battle with Registeel in Pokémon GO, trainers will have a new Legendary Pokémon to contend with in the game’s Raid Battles. The Steel-type Pokémon tagged in one of the other Legendary titans of Hoenn, Regirock.

Niantic posted the update about the switch of Raid Battle Pokémon on the official Pokémon GO Twitter account Thursday. Players will not have to deal with the Rock Peak Legendary originally seen in the Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire games on the Game Boy Advance. Although Regirock is tougher than Registeel, it’s a Rock-type meaning there are plenty of counters to take it down.

Regirock has 41,777 Raid Boss CP according to Pokémon GO Hub, a bit increase from Registeel’s 30,596. To take down this Raid Boss, trainers will want to focus on Water-, Fighting-, and Grass-type Pokémon. Specifically, Kygore, Machamp, and Groudon are the best counters to not only deal a lot of damage, but also survive Rock and Fighting attacks Regirock has available.

To face the new Raid Boss, Pokémon GO players will have to join other players at a Pokémon Gym. If trainers are able to defeat Regirock, they’ll receive Premier Balls. It’s these special Pokéballs that will allow players to catch a Regirock after the Raid is over. Like most high-level Pokémon, making use of Berries, throwing Curveballs, and timing it just right will help capture a Regirock. As for whether the Legendary Rock-type Pokémon will be good for a team will be entirely up to the trainer.

Regirock is available as a Raid Boss until September 20.

Along with the new Raid Boss, Niantic also revealed new Pokémon GO Special Research tasks will be made available on August 20. For these tasks, players will be on the hunt for the Time Travel Pokémon, Celebi.
