'The Nun' Trailer Goes Full-on 'Buried' in Claustrophobic New Teaser

It's scary because it makes no sense.

Getting buried alive is always terrifying business, but when somebody gets buried alive and gets snuggled by a nun-shaped demon, it’s so much worse.

That’s exactly what happens in the latest teaser trailer for The Nun, titled “Coffin.” Demián Bichir’s Father Anthony Burke slips — or is pushed? — into a coffin that’s already in a grave, and there’s nobody around to hear his shrieking cries for help. Without explanation, the grave is immediately filled and he’s completely buried. There’s even grass on top already and his name is on the tombstone. So this is some serious demonic magic going on, or at the very least some haunting visions sent by the demon.

Because The Nun takes place in 1952, Father Burke doesn’t have a cell phone to shine light inside the coffin, so he instead struggles to summon a bit of fire with a lighter. That’s when the Valak grabs his face from behind and screams in his ear.

Everything about this disorienting grave scene is deeply unsettling.

None of this makes sense from a logistical standpoint. How does grass grow that quickly? How do you get behind somebody that’s laying down? Perhaps this being so insane and nonsensical is what makes it that much more unsettling.

The whole thing makes that scene from Kill Bill Vol. 2, and all of Buried, look pretty tame by comparison.

Taissa Farmiga as Sister Irene in 'The Nun.'

In The Nun, Father Burke is joined by a young novitiate, Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga), who has creepy visions. Together, they’re assigned by the Vatican to investigate a nun’s suicide at the Cârța Monastery in Romania. What they find is actually the demon that first appeared in The Conjuring 2 as an undead-looking nun. The Nun is set in the same universe as all of The Conjuring and Annabelle movies and takes place three years before Annabelle: Creation.

Judging from the looks of it, The Nun could be the creepiest one of all that offers up something of an origin story that might explain what caused all of the bad stuff from the other movies.

The Nun will be unleashed upon theaters on September 7, 2018.
