Nintendo held a special Nintendo Direct on Wednesday to give some new details about the upcoming Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for the Nintendo Switch. Fans who tuned in were surprised by the reveals made in the video but were not happy about the fate of Luigi, who made a cameo.

In Wednesday’s Nintendo Direct, Luigi appears wearing his Poltergust 3000 from his series of games Luigi’s Mansion. This time, instead of slightly unfriendly ghosts, he went up against the monsters from Castlevania. When Death showed up, it was a bit too much for poor Luigi, and the demon tore the soul from his plumber body. Those watching were aghast with what happened to Luigi, but quickly forgot about it when Simon Belmont appeared, confirming his inclusion into the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster. Don’t fret though because Luigi is just fine according to the official Nintendo UK Twitter account.

Aside from Luigi’s soul ripped from his body, the Nintendo Direct had plenty of new info Smash fans have been waiting for. Five new characters will make their way into the game’s roster: Simon Belmont, Richter Belmont, Chrom, Dark Samus, and King K. Rool. Of the five, Simon Belmont and King K. Rool are the only “original” characters while the other three are Echo fighters, meaning they’re a variation of another character with different moves but play about the same. Chrom will play like Roy and Marth, while Dark Samus and Richter Belmont are based on Samus and Simon Belmont, respectively. And still no Waluigi.

Other reveals in the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Nintendo Direct were more stages, new assist trophies, and other changes to the game.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate releases for the Nintendo Switch on December 7.

There was something strange in the Nintendo Direct. When showing the game’s main menu, one option was blurred out. Smash fans came up with a theory that the blurred mode could be a new Subspace Emissary campaign.
