'Maniac' Netflix Trailer: Everything You Missed in the Crazy New Teaser

“This is some multi-reality brain magic shit.” Emma Stone’s words in the new trailer for Maniac, an upcoming Netflix original series, seem to do a pretty good job of encapsulating the plot. Created by Patrick Somerville (The Leftovers), directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga (It, True Detective Season 1), and starring Stone, Jonah Hill, Sally Field, and Justin Theroux, Maniac looks like a cross between Inception and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. In other words, it looks awesome.

A trippy new trailer for the show just hit the internet, but there’s even more to it than meets the eye. Here’s everything you missed in the official trailer for Netflix’s new series, Maniac.

The trailer opens on two seperate scenes of Hill and Stone being interviewed by Theroux’s character, some sort of doctors examining them for a new procedure presumably meant to cure some sort of mental disorder. If you look at the TV screens in the background you can see that Theroux has multiple cameras pointed at each subject’s eyes.

Next we get a look at what appears to be a pill shaped like a letter A. Moments later, Stone’s character watches the timetable at a bus station transform to create the same A-shaped pattern. It’s our first hint that things are going to get pretty trippy moving forward.

The Maniac trailer really knocks things up a notch once the procedure begins. A series of rapid images show Theroux with anime hair sitting in a hot tub across from a purple-skinned anime woman.

There’s a handwritten note, which reads, “Thank you. Because of my incompetence, I should be placed in the cone of a rocket and launched into space, so that Ernie’s folks make punish me in whatever manner they deem correct. Thank you.”

There’s also a purple koala muppet.

And a family photo of Stone and Hill with two kids and lots of terrible ‘80s hair.

Believe it or not, once we get out the other side of this rapid image sequence, things get even weirder. We see Hill and Stone in a variety of different outfits. There’s Hill with Blonde hair speaking at what looks like the U.N. and later celebrating.

At another point, he’s wearing a suit with dark hair and standing in front of a computer while we hear Hill say, “I don’t know what’s real and what’s not.”

Stone also gets some cool new looks, but nothing as ridiculous as Hill’s curly mullet.

Oh, and here’s a giant Jonah Hill lying in the middle of a city street.

Conversations between Theroux and Sally Field, who appears to play a concerned doctor, seem to confirm that this is all a simulation. They also note that every time they attempt to separate Hill and Stone the two somehow find each other. Meanwhile, here’s what the test subjects are actually up to in the real world.

Finally, I just want to point out that the Maniac logo looks a lot like IBM’s. Whether that (or anything else in the trailer) actually means anything remains to be seen.

Prepare to have your mind blown when Maniac hits Netflix on September 15.
