There’s an Incredibly Grim Easter Egg in a New ‘Rick and Morty’ Clip

Were you ready for this character to die?

Adult Swim

The latest clip from Rick and Morty is technically a new commercial for Old Spice set in their universe, but there’s still a horrible Easter egg hidden in the chaos of Morty’s room.

The new commercial — technically “sponsored content” — shows Rick bursting into Morty’s room at 3 a.m. for some promotional absurdity. With a megaphone, Rick introduces “the Old Spice Invisible Sprays!” Bear Glove, Swagger, and Pure Sport are each shaped like typical Old Spice spray bottles (with familiar scent names), but human height. Each gets a defining accessory: bear gloves, huge headphones, and a headband. They burst into the room and begin grabbing stuff like Stealy (from Adventures of Stealy, of course).

Morty pleads in vain with the sprays to stop messing with his stuff, and he spends most of the clip grappling with them as they eat random objects and spray their magic mist everywhere. Tragically, one of the objects they devour is none other than the beloved Butter Robot that suffered an existential crisis late in Season 1. Tragic.

The clip echoes a Carl’s Jr. ad from 2015 that follows the same format, which itself riffed on a scene from Season 1’s “M. Night Shaym-Aliens!” (the simulation episode).

In the Old Spice clip, Pure Sport eats some Super Nintendo cartridges from Morty’s desk, Bear Glove gobbles a NASA Shuttle from the nightstand, and Swagger downs a green book from the shelf. But amidst the chaos, Pure Sport finds the butter robot in the desk and passes it to Bear Glove, who then tosses it directly into Swagger’s open mouth. RIP.

Meanwhile, Rick just counts up all the money he made from the deal.

Maybe Rick can use that money to speed up production on Season 4.

Rick and Morty Season 4 remains unconfirmed, but there’s no doubt in anyone’s mind that the show will return.
