Want a Free VPN? Download Opera's New Desktop Browser

Opera

Opera’s newest browser is going to make the world wide web a little more, well, worldwide. The latest update features a free, unlimited VPN built-in.

Virtual Private Networks — or VPNs — allow internet users to change where they’re accessing the internet from even as they stay in the same physical place, by connecting to a secure server somewhere else in the world. This is extremely helpful for users who are trying to maintain their privacy or access geo-locked content.

“Until now, VPNs have largely been used by people who have a good understanding of how the internet works,” Opera announced on Tuesday.

“We strongly believe that if more people knew how the internet truly works, they would use a VPN — and we hope that by making our browser VPN free and easy to use, it will become an essential tool for everyone,” the statement explains.

Opera 40’s VPN allows users to connect from five different locations:

  • The United States
  • Canada
  • Germany
  • The Netherlands
  • Singapore

The service — which was previously limited to the browser’s developer version only — is now available to the masses.

It seems like it’s pretty easy to use, too. According to Opera, surfers just need to Go to “Settings” or Preferences,” select “Privacy & Security,” and then the option to toggle the VPN on or off will be right there.

Users can choose where they want to connect from, or rely on the browser’s automatic selection, which connects to the fastest country select based on network speed, server capacity, and latency.
