'Ghostbusters 2' Prophecy: Apocalypse Arrives on Valentine's Day 2016 (Sunday)

Valentine's Day ... bummer.

Do you have plans this Valentine’s Day? Are you and your significant other going to go out to a nice candle-lit dinner for some romantic banter before retiring to the boudoir to whisper sweet nothings into each other’s ears until things get a little more hot and heavy? Don’t plan on it: The world is going to end on February 14, 2016.

Well, at least this apocalyptic Valentine’s Day will happen according to the 1989 sequel Ghostbusters 2. In the unfairly maligned follow up to the stone cold comedy classic, the once-heroic Ghostbusters find themselves as washed up shells of their former selves. After saving the world from interdimensional evil beings and a gigantic Marshmallow Man, Bill Murray’s Peter Venkman character ends up being the host of a chintzy cable access TV show called World of the Psychic. In the less than comfortable segment seen in the movie, one of Venkman’s guests predicts the end of the world as this Sunday. It seemed like a distant thought 27 years ago, but it seems as though the end is nigh.

Yes, that’s correct. According to Venkman’s psychic guest Elaine, an alien she met at the bar of the Holiday Inn in Paramus, NJ (or maybe it was just a spaceship made to look like that?) says it’s all over for everyone. But she might be wrong. The other guest, Milton Angland played by actor Kevin Dunn, had his apocalyptic New Year’s Eve 1989 prediction almost come true until the Ghostbusters saved the day again.

Is this 2016 prediction just insane viral marketing for Paul Feig’s upcoming Ghostbusters reboot? Probably not, since, like Venkman says, the filmmakers wouldn’t see any returns on their investment if the apocalypse prediction was true.

But we do know we’ve survived a lot of apocalypse predictions before. That crazy Harold Camping dude wrongly predicted it’d all end in 2011, while 2012 came and went, and that’s only in real life. We all survived Judgement Day on August 29th, 1997, didn’t we?

Futuristic dates have caught up with us a lot recently. Fans should recall that October 21, 2015 was the date Marty McFly and Doc Brown traveled to the future in Back to the Future Part II (also released in 1989). It came and went. We have hoverboards and a lot more, but no time-traveling Deloreans.

So remember, when you’re celebrating Valentine’s Day this weekend, instead of going out to a fancy restaurant maybe just stay in and watch Ghostbusters or Ghostbusters 2 one last time before the world ends. Perhaps you could book a room at the actual Paramus Holiday Inn. Unfortunately the only bar at the hotel is the breakfast bar. It closes at 10:30 a.m., but it does have their “signature cinnamon rolls, omelets, bacon, sausage, biscuits and more.” Just watch out for aliens.
