Huge 4Chan Leak Reveals 11 New 'Super Smash Bros. Ultimate' Characters

But you'll have to solve a series of riddles to figure them out.

Capcom

There’s been a lot of speculation around the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster, specifically when it comes to which new characters (if any) Nintendo is still planning to announce before the game launches in December. Popular guesses include Mario villain (and tennis doubles partner) Waluigi, Donkey Kong archenemy King K. Rool, and Castlevania hero Simon Belmont. Now, a fresh leak claims to reveal all of the remaining Super Smash Bros. Roster, but there’s a catch.

The latest Smash bros. leak comes in the form of an anonymous post on 4chan (via Twin Galaxies), which already makes it pretty sketchy. On top of that, it’s delivered in the form of a riddle, with clues in place of actual character names. So before we dive in, make sure you’re taking everything with a grain of salt.

Update, Aug. 8: Nintendo made Smash Bros. news today with a Direct presentation. Check out all the newly announced characters, along with a list of other rumored fighters who could still join the roster. Inverse’s original article continues below.

That being said, this is basically a treasure trove of teases and hints for hungry Super Smash Bros. fans. So let’s take a closer look at these Ultimate roster clues. First, here’s the original post:

OK Kiddies, see if you can figure this one out.
July: The characters “King” and “Ponytail” will be revealed in a mini direct
August: The character “Old Man” will be revealed at years EVO
September: The character “Archer” will be revealed in a direct of some kind
October: The Characters “Warrior” & “Secretary” will be revealed in a Smash Ultimate focused Direct.
November: The character “Mech” will be revealed in a surprise character announcement
The other characters: The Characters “Rhythm” “Folklore” “Doll” and “Prime Ribs” won’t get reveal trailers until post release.

Confused? That’s fine. We’re here to break down these riddles for you one by one.

The first clue, “King” should set off an alarm for anyone who’s been following along with recent leaks. Could this be King K. Rool? If that’s the case, then “Ponytail” is probably a Donkey Kong character too. Maybe Dixie Kong, who also rocks a ponytail.

Next on the list is “Old Man,” which could potentially be another Donkey Kong fighter. Maybe Cranky Kong? Then again, considering that this character is allegedly getting announced at EVO (a yearly fighting game tournament), it makes sense that it could be a character from another fighting game series. Like, say, Heihachi, the patriarch villain from the Tekken series.

As for “Archer,” one popular guess is that this could be a Pokémon addition from the seventh-generation Sun and Moon games. Specifically, it might be Decidueye, the archer-inspired final evolution of grass-type starter Rowlet.

In October, Nintendo could announce two new characters at a “Smash Ultimate focused Direct” presentation. “Warrior” might be Simon Belmont, the long rumored addition from Castlevania. As for “Secretary,” the popular guess seems to be Isabella from Animal Crossing: New Leaf.

Then, in November, Nintendo will allegedly announce one final pre-release character: “Mech.” We’re not sure who that will be, but one decent guess on 4chan is Elma from Xenoblade Chronicles X.

Finally, the leaker hints at four more additions coming to the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster after the game is already released: “Rhythm”, “Folklore”, “Doll”, and “Prime Ribs.” That last one sounds like a reference to the Metroid Prime series, possible hinting at a Dark Samus character. Doll could be Geno from Super Mario RPG, a perennial fan favorite, while Rhythm may be a reference to the Chorus Kinds from the from the Rhythm Heaven series. As for Folklore, no one seems to know what that could be reffering to, and it looks like we won’t know for another six months or so.

At least in the meantime we have a couple of Smash-focused Nintendo Direct presentations to look forward to — assuming this leak turns out to be true, of course.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate launches on December 7 for Nintendo Switch.
